Since they debuted, the BRZ and FR-S have had no real competition other than themselves.  But now, GM president Mark Ruess told Australia's Drive that a competitor was on GM's list.  The most likely candidate is the Chevrolet Code 130R concept, which was shown at the Detroit Auto Show.

Car news for January 19th, 2013

VW XL1 in the Snow-
Information credits-CarBuzz mobile app
Volkswagen has been testing the XL1, which is supposed to be a diesel-hybrid car that supposedly could do 235 MPG!  I don't know about you, but that seems a bit optimistic of VW.  The XL1 is also going to be able to maintain control in bad weather.  CarBuzz has caught the XL1 testing in -22 degrees Fahrenheit.
The XL1 will get its power from a puny two cylinder turbo diesel with, gulp, 50 horsepower, accompanied by a 30HP electric motor.  80 horsepower to me sounds a bit, underpowered.  It will have a seven-speed dual clutch transmission.  Here's my favorite bit, it has gull wing doors.  The XL1 should be revealed later in 2013.

Porsche has been testing its hybrid supercar in cold weather.  CarBuzz spotted the 918 in the Martini livery testing in Sweden.   The 918 will be the successor of the Carrera GT, it has a 4.6L V8 with two electric motors.  Altogether this car will produce an astonishing 762 HP.  The 918 will weigh in at around 1700 kilograms with 0-60MPH time of under three seconds.  Flat out, this car will reach 202 MPH.  And here's the best bit, it'll do 78MPG.
The 918 is arriving in September 2013, but only 918 cars will be sold.  Unfortunately for those who want one, for 645,000 Euros, will have to wait, Because all 918 have been sold.

Both automakers signed an agreement saying that Mazda will build the cars at it's factory in Hiroshima.  Fiat's CEO recognized that Mazda was a leader in rear-drive compact cars.

2006 Toyota Tundra Double Cab Review

2006 Toyota Tundra Limited Double Cab

The Toyota Tundra has long been #4 in the US truck world, Behind the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado and the Dodge Ram.  It also has competition from the likes of GMC and Nissan.  But I think the new Tundra has the potential to be #1.  But this review will go back 7 years to see if the Tundra is as good then as it is now.

If you drive a truck, you probably need space, lots of towing capabilities, and rock hard reliability.  The Tundra has all of these things.  This review is on the four seat model with the 4.7L V8 engine.  It has plenty of interior room, although this room is for things, it’s a bit less comfortable for actual people or dogs.  The Tundra also has a 6.2ft. Bed, which allows for tons of storage space for almost everything you need.  It doesn’t have the biggest bed size in its class, but it isn’t the smallest either.  As for reliability, well, it’s a Toyota, so yes, it’s very reliable.  The only problems we’ve experienced were a loose heat shield and a worn muffler.  Both of those things aren’t really as a result of the car; more just time running its course.  Another area that the Toyota impresses on is towing.  It hasn’t failed to tow whatever we threw at it, car trailers, trailers with Kubotas on them, karting trailer etc.  So good mark for Toyota there.

The Tundra is obviously not a pretty truck, but then, who really cares if a pick up looks good or not?  However, it isn’t ugly either.  The interior, well, it’s a truck interior.  I suppose I like the fake wood trim, but from there, nothing much to report.  I find that the seats get uncomfortable on long journeys and that the radio quality can be a bit marginal sometimes.  The leather also wears quite quickly and junk and crumbs get stuck everywhere.

The Tundra has a 4.7L V8 producing 271 HP and 313 ft. lbs. torque.  This is not bad and allows for the Tundra’s exceptional towing capacities.  To boot, on overtake and acceleration it sounds quite nice, actually.  It is a truck, so would you expect it to handle well?  No, but for a full size pick up, it’s not bad.  The ride, however, is a bit bouncy, but again, it is a truck.  The five-speed automatic in this car is well timed and doesn’t change its mind every two seconds.

The Tundra is also very safe, with and overall 4 star rating.  The only noted issue was a “marginal” rating for the feet in frontal crash.  Oh well, your feet will get better.  However, the only real downside to the Tundra is its fuel economy.  It gets 14 city and 17 highway.  Not exactly a Prius now is it?  That means filling up almost constantly.  So, if fuel economy is a big thing for you, then you will perhaps be considering buying a new truck.  But the 2006 Tundra will only cost you in the range of $12,000 US dollars.  That’s not a lot for a 7 year old truck with some of the capabilities of a 2013 model.
So the Toyota Tundra then is a great truck and can compete with the likes of Ford and Chevrolet, even if you have to refill every 12 yards.  Twice

Mclaren Changes the MP4-12C GT3 for 2013-

The MP4-12C GT3 is available for $500,000 US dollars to race teams and normal people alike.
The GT3 had a successful first season, logging 19 wins and 19 podiums in the 98 races it participated in.  13 Mclaren GT teams took part.  In 2012, the GT3 was only available to European based teams, but in 2013 it will be available world-wide.
The 2013 model has an updated aerodynamic pack concerning the front splitter, rear wing, and diffusers.  It also included an new Mclaren Electronics ECU, updated cooling system.  The GT3 has a 3.8L twin-turbo producing over 500HP, transferred to the wheels via a 6-speed sequential transmission.  I think this car is just incredible, road going and in GT3 version.  I can't wait to see its successor.  The 2013 MP4-12C GT3 is eligible for every FIA GT3 series.  World rally champion Sebastien Loeb will drive two GT3s.

Rolls-Royce Wraith coming by the end of 2013-
Information source: MotorTrend mobile app

Earlier, MotorTrend had spotted a Ghost-based coupe testing, and now that car has been named the Wraith.  The Wraith is set to appear at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show.  The Wraith name was first used in 1928.  I personally cannot wait for the new Rolls to come out, as i would love to see the brand expand and succeed.
It is said to produce up to 600(!) HP coming from a 12 cylinder turbo.

Car News for January 17th, 2013

BMW M3 spotted testing:
The new BMW M3 has been spotted by MotorTrend testing in the snow.  Half of its camoflauge has been removed so that we can see the top section of the car.  To me, it looks like most modern M3s. But MotorTrend says that it has massive brakes, a different diffuser under the rear bumper, and two sets of mufflers mounted at the center.  MotorTrend says that the new M3 is thought to have an I-6 engine producing in the ballpark of 450HP, possibly with three turbos, one powered by electric.

2010 Honda CR-V Review

2010 Honda CR-V: The car for somebody who just wants a car.

JT Coupal

The Honda CR-V is a boring car to somebody who likes any sort of performance or styling.  But, do not think that I am saying that the CR-V is a bad car, but if you want a quick and good looking car, read no further.

I’ll start with the cars styling, which, as previously stated, is nothing special.  But it isn’t ugly either.  I’d say that the front is the best angle, although it does look a bit too tall, and the Honda badge is hidden within the grille and hood.  From the sides, the CR-V is nothing special.  Just looks like a big tall SUV.  Imagine that.  The rear is where it goes rotten.  The problem is with the taillights.  I’m sorry, but no other car has long, vertical taillights.  So the styling is nothing special, but hey, was this car meant to turn heads?

Again, the interior is not going to stand up to Rolls-Royce, but it could be a lot worse.  It is an inviting interior, mainly because it does have quite a lot of room inside.  The CR-V is not equipped with anything ground breaking or even, to be brutally honest, up to date.  But it does have the basics.  If I can complement something, it’d be the MP3.  It is easy to use and has a good sound quality.  The rear seats are very roomy, and the hatch in the rear opens to a roomy cargo space.  This means you can carry everything from your dog to a small alpaca.  Lying down.

Now, brace yourself, performance.  For starters, the 2010 CR-V has 4 cylinder, 2.4 Liter, 180HP engine.  It also produces a very average 161 ft. lb. torque.  The CR-V does not go fast.  Simple as that.  Overtaking on a two-lane road is a painstakingly slow process, and the engine screams like a banshee at you for attempting to hit 70.  Another issue I noticed was the 5-speed automatic transmission.  If you kept the throttle steady, at around 55, the transmission will constantly change its mind, like a chorus warming up.  The engine will go from a low grumble to a high-pitched yell.  Now, I’ve seen reviews that commemorate the CR-V’s responsive handling.  But according to my informant (a.k.a my mom), the CR-V simply waves off the idea of going round a bend and goes straight.  Otherwise known as catastrophic understeer.  But again, this is an average car for an average person, so in the real world, who cares how it handles?

There are many more aspects of car testing, so I’ll go through some of them.  It has been noted by many respected car websites that the CR-V is a safe car.  As I have not been in a car crash, I can’t tell you.  So we’ll say the CR-V is safe.  Now for a bad thing.  You would expect that the CR-V would do, say, 35 MPG.  But no.  Our average in the CR-V never exceeded 25 MPG.  Dismal.  The CR-V, however, is not expensive by any means, but I do doubt its value.  You can get a 2010 model used for around 18-20 thousand.  To me, that’s questionable.

So, the 2010 Honda CR-V.  Overall, this car is average.  It is not best or even runner-up in any category.  So, if you have no real interest in performance, and just want a car to get to and from work or the shops (which I’m not saying is bad), then you could consider this car.  If not, look elsewhere.

News for January 16th, 2013

2014 Lexus IS-Detroit Motor Show
The IS is probably Lexus's most agressive looking car on the market today.  The new IS is based off of the LF-CC Concept in four-door version.  The front end of the car features Lexus's "L" shaped running lights and their new grille.
The new 2014 IS will be available in RWD and AWD drive, and either a 2.5L V6 or a 3.5L V6.  Performance figures or the IS have not yet been realeased.  But it will have an 8-speed automatic transmission.  The IS will also feature multilink rear suspension and electric power steering.  Some safety features include a blind spot monitor, lane departure alert and automatic high beams.

Acura MDX Prototype-
This MDX concept is actually pretty much what the new one will look like, other than the bumpers.  The updated crossover will have three row seating.  It will have a 3.5L i-VTEC V6, and performance figures have yet to be realeased.  The new MDX will have either the company's Super Handling AWD System or FWD.  It also has a lighter chassis and more rear leg room.  I think this car looks great aand should sell well with American buyers, especially being one of the few concepts without a hybrid engine.

Mini Clubman S Review

Mini Clubman S: The Lion in Sheep’s Clothing

JT Coupal

This is my first car review on my families Mini Clubman S.  I am aware that i have not covered certain aspects, and that it may not be top notch, but i promise my reviews will get better and i plan to do alot of them.  -JT  (Please Comment, i'd like to know how i'm doing.)
Most people have heard of the original Mini, and even the retro versions from the late 90’s.  Now, Mini is owned by BMW, having previously been an independent British company, although it went through ownership from fellow British car maker, Austin.  BMW has two factories it uses to make the current Mini model lineup, one in Germany and one in Britain.

The Clubman model is, in essence, an elongated Cooper, with a complementary third door on the passenger side that opens suicide style.  The S Model has 181 Horsepower and a turbo.  The purpose of a turbo is to increase the horsepower of the car and it’s top speed, although this does produce the side effect of turbo lag.  Turbo lag is a gap between when the driver hits the gas and when the turbo kicks in.  The Clubman has none of this, luckily.

The car used in this test is a 2008, red with special checker pattern dual sun roof and the classic dual black stripe.  Although the car may be boxy, I think Mini has done a good job styling the Clubman, but, being a Mini it will stand out in any crowd.

The interior is surprisingly spacious for the size of the car, as well as comfortable for the sportiness of the car.  The test car’s interior is black, with checkered flag trim.  This is a very good combo, although I am biased towards things with a checker pattern.  The center stack has a modern look to it, the switches are big enough to operate, and nothing is very difficult to use.  I especially like the truly enormous speedometer, with the fuel gauge and warning lights inside of it. The rear seats are quite roomy. I am 5’ 3” which is smaller than most adults, but who is usually in the back seat of a car anyways?  I am especially fond of the “mood” lighting BMW has put in the Clubman, you can adjust it via a switch above the rear view mirror.  It toggles from blue to violet to orange.  Although the light is insignificant, it allows the interior to feel a bit less industrial.

One of the Clubman’s special features is the dual rear doors.  They open outwards from the center, revealing a decent cargo area.  The space becomes much bigger if you fold the rear seats down.  A family of three could go camping for the weekend with the space available.

Another nice feature is the sport button, located in front of the, by the way, wonderful 6-speed manual gearbox.  This tightens up the suspension and increases throttle response.  This allows for better handling, but the price is a decrease in ride comfort, and allows less accelerator pedal travel for a given speed.  For example,  say you travel along the highway at 60MPH with the sport button off.  Then, keeping at exactly 60, turn the sport mode on, the car will then jump to about 65-66 MPH.  I haven’t tried this, obviously as I’m twelve.  But parents did note the effects of the sport button and gave it two thumbs up.  Another feature that I haven’t tried yet is the DSC, or Dynamic Stability Control (traction control).  This has three settings, on, all-terrain, and off.  “On” is normal driving, allowing for limited sliding and loss of control.  The All-Terrain mode does something similar when in the snow or dirt.  Off is for when you really want to have fun on a twisty road or on a track.

The Clubman’s main merit in my opinion is its performance.  The Clubman is front wheel drive, which some people argue isn’t what you want in a sports car.  But, the Clubman is not a sports car; it’s a family hatchback that performs like a sports car.  I can’t actually drive the car, but according to its drivers, it is an absolute hoot to drive.  It will accelerate from 0-60 in 7 seconds!  To put that in perspective, a hardcore super car with 700 horsepower will do 0-60 in around 2.5 seconds.  We are talking here about a family car!  As mentioned before you can have the Clubman in a 6-speed manual, like the test car, or an optional 6-speed automatic.  I can only tell you about the manual, but what I can tell you is all good.  All of the gears are easy to get into, with the exception of third, which is a bit tough, although that could be specific to the test car.  The gear ratios are quite good and evenly spaced.

The noise that the Clubman makes isn’t bad either.  Up past 3000 RPM you get a satisfying but restrained rumble.  The handling though is really where the Clubman stands out.  It will hug the inside of a corner all the way through, even if the driver is completely incompetent.  And in all this, the ride comfort isn’t bad.  It’s no Rolls-Royce, but for a sports hatchback, it’s not bad.

However, there are still some complaints.  In the 5 months or so my family has owned the car; we have had to send it in for service as a result of a timing belt issue, which as far as I can work out flooded the pistons with too much fuel, bogging the engine down.  This was a very expensive job.  And perhaps the armrest is uncomfortable and yes, maybe every time the driver goes to change gear, he or she hits the armrest or the passenger’s arm, but these are completely insignificant little niggles.  Some people complain it looks bad as well, but in my view, it looks better than many cars in its class.

And if you don’t need much space and want more performance, then perhaps the Mini Cooper is for you.  To sum it up then is easy; it’s a wonderful little family hatchback, with the heart of a lion.
